Statement from Mai Wyn Schantz
From 2013-2020, Mai Wyn Fine Art was a small art gallery in the heart of Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe Drive. It was both the working studio of artist-owner Mai Wyn Schantz and a commercial gallery representing a devoted group of Colorado-based artists. During that time Mai Wyn Fine Art gained a reputation for quality art and well-curated exhibitions and became an anchor within the thriving downtown art district.
From the beginning Schantz sought out artists whose work complemented her distinctive paintings on stainless steel. This evolving roster became a mix of emerging and established artists who worked in a wide range of media. Through thoughtful curation, fine craft including ceramics and jewelry showed seamlessly alongside installation art, sculpture, printmaking, drawing and painting.
Despite its modest 800 square-foot footprint, Mai Wyn Fine Art had the feel of a spacious white-cube gallery. The front half was devoted to formal solo and group exhibitions and in the back, beyond a clever floating storage wall, lived Mai Wyn’s personal studio. Schantz often painted during gallery hours and visitors were encouraged to move throughout the two spaces.
Unfortunately Mai Wyn Schantz shuttered her gallery at the onset of the COVID pandemic. The closure felt sudden and tragic, leaving both Mai Wyn and her artists ungrounded. In 2021, Schantz organized a show of her stable at Space Annex in Denver’s Baker neighborhood. The four-day exhibition Hello, Goodbye was the perfect way to tie up loose ends and celebrate the wonderful years they shared at Mai Wyn Fine Art.
Now, five years later, Schantz has curated a new show at the Curtis Center for the Arts. Here + Now is at its heart a reunion of old friends. It’s a chance to see what these artists are up to now. Gallery representation has changed, their work has evolved, and families have grown, yet all sixteen artists have come together once again in this special group show.
